Amirkabir University of Technology Researchers Successfully Field Test and Commercialize Multiphase Flowmeter Device for Oil Industry

Researchers at Amirkabir University of Technology have achieved a significant milestone by successfully conducting a field test of a multiphase flowmeter device in the Azadegan oil field. This breakthrough was recently reported by the university's public relations department. Omid Khayat, a graduate of Amirkabir University and the project manager for "Production of VG MPFM Multiphase Oil and Gas Flow Meter," explained the device's capabilities. It has the unique ability to measure the flow rates of three separate phases—water, oil, and gas—simultaneously and in real time, eliminating the need for phase separation.
The initial concept for designing and manufacturing this flowmeter originated from a doctoral thesis at the Faculty of Energy and Physics Engineering in 2010. Over the course of eight years of dedicated research and development, technical knowledge was acquired, leading to the successful production of a prototype in 2018. The semi-industrial multiphase flowmeter marked a significant milestone as the first of its kind in the country.
The Amirkabir University researchers employed nuclear absorptiometry and microwave spectrometry technologies to measure phase fractions, while a differential pressure measurement tool was utilized to determine phase velocities during the construction of this innovative device.
It is worth noting that the development of the VG MPFM multiphase flowmeter device began in 2013 as part of Omid Khayat's doctoral dissertation under the guidance of Dr. Hossein Afarideh at the Faculty of Energy and Physics Engineering. After 12 years of dedicated efforts, the product has been successfully manufactured, commercialized, and introduced into the oil industry market. Several prominent companies, including the National Oil-rich Southern Regions Company, Arvandan Oil and Gas Company, Iran Continental Plateau Oil Company, and Oil Engineering and Development Company, have expressed interest in utilizing this groundbreaking technology for well testing services with a multiphase flowmeter.
